Saunas & Sommarstugas

This 2019 tour through central Sweden and Norway documents the regional design languages of Scandinavian saunas and sommarstugas (summer cabins).  The colors of these structures are often indicative of the minerals native to the place, such as the iconic falu red sommarstugas in Sweden -the color historically produced from the tailings of the copper mines at Falun.  Other features such as the sod roofs, common in Norway, serve the functional purpose of compressing the log structures to become more water resistant.
